Royal Premium Beer Flat Top Can

Royal Premium Beer Flat Top Can

The Royal Premium Beer Flat Top Can represents a notable chapter in mid-century Chicago breweriana. Marketed under the "Royal Brewing Company" moniker in Chicago, Illinois, the label served as one of several trade names utilized by the Canadian Ace Brewing Corporation (formerly Manhattan Brewing Company).

Historical Context

During the middle of the twentieth century, prolific urban breweries often created separate brand identities and "fictitious" brewery designations to distribute private labels, appeal to diverse market tiers, or meet contractual bottling agreements without diluting their primary flagship brands. Canadian Ace made regular use of this marketing strategy from its South Side facility on Emerald Avenue. Under this distribution framework, cans branded under the Royal name carried Chicago mandatory text while sharing production lines with other Canadian Ace offerings.

Design and Collector Insights

The can showcases classic era-specific commercial design, featuring prominent typography and clean graphic elements tailored to stand out on grocery shelves. Known variations exist across different manufacturing runs, showcasing subtle differences such as metallic versus non-metallic enamel finishes, as well as minor typographic shifts in the mandatory brewery text and alcohol labeling statements.

Because of its direct connection to the expansive contract and house-brand brewing history of Chicago, the Royal Premium Beer flat top remains a compelling addition for collectors specializing in Illinois regional labels and mid-century graphic packaging.
