Brewery Background & Heritage

Founded in 1867 in Manhattan's Yorkville neighborhood, the Jacob Ruppert Brewery grew into one of the largest brewing operations in the United States. The enterprise gained widespread fame under the leadership of Colonel Jacob Ruppert Jr., who expanded the brewery's footprint along Third Avenue between 90th and 92nd Streets and famously owned the New York Yankees. The brewery's flagship Knickerbocker label became deeply ingrained in New York culture, frequently marketed directly to local sports enthusiasts and metropolitan tavern-goers.

Design and Collector Context

The 16-ounce "half quart" pint format was packaged for consumers seeking larger single-serving portions. Featuring bold mid-century typography and the "New York's Beer" promotional tagline, this pint can prominently displays the shortened "Knick" moniker alongside traditional Ruppert branding elements.

In breweriana circles, 16-ounce cans from prominent metropolitan New York breweries are favored for their shelf presence when displayed alongside standard twelve-ounce counterparts. Known variations across production runs include subtle alterations to seam construction, mandatory text arrangement, and color accents on the main shield graphic. The can remains a key piece for regional New York collectors and enthusiasts of historic East Coast breweriana.
