S B Beer Cone Top Can

Tampa's Classic Post-Prohibition Cone

This 12-ounce high-profile cone top can represents mid-twentieth-century packaging from the Southern Brewing Company of Tampa, Florida. The container features a metallic gold background framed by illustrated tropical palm trees flanking a bold circular badge. Inside the central red emblem, the arched text "SOUTHERN BREWING CO." encircles prominent lettering reading "SB BEER," anchored above the city designation "TAMPA, FLORIDA" at the bottom.

Following the repeal of Prohibition, Southern Brewing Company introduced the "SB" brand to anchor its product portfolio across Florida and neighboring Southeastern markets. The "SB" initials carried a dual significance, standing both for the Southern Brewing corporate identity and its companion brand, Silver Bar. Marketed as a crisp, refreshing lager tailored to the warm climate of the Gulf Coast, SB Beer was promoted heavily across regional print and radio campaigns, serving as a flagship offering for local consumers.

Founded in 1934 at the corner of Zack and Pierce Streets in downtown Tampa, Southern Brewing Company quickly established itself as an essential post-repeal regional operation. The facility opened with an annual capacity of 100,000 barrels and built strong community loyalty through its welcoming hospitality room, pioneering the practice of hosting public brewery tours with complimentary refreshments. Southern Brewing maintained steady production for over two decades until industry pressures mounted in the mid-1950s when major national brands constructed massive competing facilities in Tampa. The company was sold to International Breweries, Inc. in 1956, and the downtown facility ultimately ceased operations in 1963.

For breweriana enthusiasts, this can holds special significance within the realm of Southern regional packaging. Cone tops originating from Florida breweries represent a celebrated era in regional manufacturing, highlighting the distinctive graphic character and commercial heritage of Florida's independent brewing industry before nationwide consolidation.
