Schaefer America's Oldest Lager Beer 12 Oz Tab/Stay Top Can

Schaefer Lehigh Valley Lager Can

The Schaefer America's Oldest Lager Beer 12 Oz Tab/Stay Top Can represents a pivotal chapter in the history of the F. & M. Schaefer Brewing Company. Originating in New York in 1842 under brothers Frederick and Maximilian Schaefer, the brand rose to become one of the nation's dominant regional and national brewers. In 1972, Schaefer opened its modern, high-capacity Lehigh Valley plant in Breinigsville, Pennsylvania, near Allentown, in an aggressive push to modernize packaging and stay competitive with expanding national conglomerates.

Packaging and Graphic Elements

This can proudly highlights the brewery's legacy with the prominent tagline "America's Oldest Lager Beer," alongside the historic slogan "Our hand has never lost its skill". The graphics showcase Schaefer’s signature bold script logo, crest motifs, and detailed ingredient copy, reflecting the brand's mid-to-late 20th-century aesthetic. The mandatory text on the side panel denotes the packaging location at The F. & M. Schaefer Brewing Co. in Lehigh Valley, PA.

Collector Notes and Variations

For can collectors, this release marks the transitionary period of Schaefer's manufacturing footprint from its historic Brooklyn operations to Pennsylvania. Known variations of this can exist, displaying differences in metallic finishes, minor shifts in mandatory disclaimer text, and the eventual inclusion of Universal Product Code (UPC) barcodes as retail standards modernized. The Lehigh Valley era cans remain especially notable among breweriana enthusiasts because the facility was later sold to the Stroh Brewery Company in 1981, making cans with the original Lehigh Valley F&M Schaefer moniker key artifacts from the final independent decade of America's heritage lager brand.
