Schaefer Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

The Schaefer Tab Top Can

The Schaefer Beer 12 oz Tab Top can represents a defining era for the F. & M. Schaefer Brewing Company of New York, NY. Established in 1842 by German immigrant brothers Frederick and Maximilian Schaefer, the company promoted its flagship product under the celebrated slogan "America's Oldest Lager Beer". By the mid-20th century, Schaefer ranked among the largest brewing operations in the United States, making its canned beer ubiquitous across the Northeast and beyond.

Design and Collectibility

This 12-ounce can features Schaefer's recognizable red, white, and gold livery centered around the classic brand script and heraldic crest. The label prominently emphasizes the brand's long heritage and New York brewing pedigree. During this era, Schaefer's packaging frequently tied into major regional promotions and cultural milestones, most notably the 1964–1965 New York World's Fair, which generated commemorative can graphics featuring the fair's official insignia.

Manufacturing and Variations

Reflecting the period's packaging advancements, these cans utilize a bi-metal construction featuring a steel body paired with an aluminum end. For breweriana collectors, the can exhibits multiple variations across different production runs. These variations include differences in mandatory city text along the seam—such as listings that reference New York alongside other brewing facilities like Albany—as well as slight modifications to copyright notices, rim striping, and can manufacturer stamps.

Representing one of New York's most famous brewing institutions, this can remains a quintessential piece of mid-century American breweriana.
