Schaefer Draft 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Schaefer Draft Lehigh Valley Can

The Schaefer Draft 12 Oz Tab Top Can issued by the F. & M. Schaefer Brewing Company represents a significant chapter in East Coast brewing history. Marked with the Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania mandatory line, this container originates from the era when the historic brewer expanded into its modern facility in the region.

Historical Context

Founded in New York in 1842 by German immigrants Frederick and Maximilian Schaefer, the company established itself as a regional powerhouse under the banner of "America's Oldest Lager Beer." To modernize canning operations and increase distribution volume, the company established a large brewing facility in Lehigh Valley (Breinigsville), Pennsylvania. Cans featuring the Lehigh Valley designation reflect this pivotal period of centralized production prior to the brewery's acquisition by the Stroh Brewery Company.

Can Design and Branding

The face of the can features Schaefer's bold draft branding alongside the traditional company crest and heritage heraldry. The graphics incorporate classic mottos associated with the brewer, including "America's Oldest Lager Beer" and the long-running slogan "Our Hand Has Never Lost Its Skill." Mandatory manufacturing text printed along the seam and lower rim credits The F. & M. Schaefer Brewing Co. of Lehigh Valley, PA.

Known Variations

Breweriana collectors recognize variations of this Lehigh Valley draft can. Known production differences include subtle alterations in mandatory distributor text placement, differing manufacturer seam logos, and packaging runs produced across different metallic compositions.
