Scheidt's Valley Forge Beer Flat Top Can

Scheidt's Valley Forge Flat Top

The Scheidt's Valley Forge Beer Flat Top Can represents one of the flagship offerings from the Adam Scheidt Brewing Company of Norristown, Pennsylvania. Named in honor of the nearby historic Revolutionary War encampment, the Valley Forge label grew to become one of the most prominent regional beers in the Mid-Atlantic market.

Brewery Background

Originally established along Stony Creek by Charles Scheidt and later expanded significantly by his brother Adam, the brewery grew into one of the largest brewing complexes in Montgomery County. Following the repeal of Prohibition, Valley Forge Beer served as the brewery's primary product line alongside offerings like Ram's Head Ale and Prior. The brand enjoyed extensive distribution throughout Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, and Washington, D.C.

Design and Manufacturer Details

The graphic layout of the can emphasizes the historic Valley Forge name with prominent period typography and the Scheidt company identity. Containers were supplied by major can manufacturers of the era, primarily the American Can Company—featuring the trademark "Keglined" branding along the seam—as well as the Continental Can Company.

Known Variations

Collectors recognize several variations of the Valley Forge Beer flat top. These differences generally correspond to evolving state regulatory requirements and supplier transitions. Variations include examples with New York distributor licensing notices printed near the seam, differences in manufacturer canning codes, and differing layout placements of mandatory brewery text and star emblems.

Following the acquisition of Adam Scheidt Brewing by Philadelphia-based C. Schmidt & Sons, the brand remained a staple of eastern Pennsylvania brewing history, making this flat top an enduring piece of mid-century breweriana.
