Schell's Beer 16 Oz Tab Top Can

Schell's 16 Oz Half Quart

Produced by the August Schell Brewing Company in New Ulm, Minnesota, this half-quart release represents a distinctive chapter in Upper Midwest brewing history. As one of the oldest family-owned breweries in America, Schell's established a prominent regional following, distributing its flagship offerings across Minnesota and neighboring territories.

During the era of half-quart marketing, breweries produced larger sixteen-ounce straight-steel cans to appeal to tavern patrons, sporting events, and outdoor gatherings. Schell's issued its staple beer in these tall cans, adorned with traditional heraldic imagery and recognizable slogans such as "It's a Grand Old Beer".

Breweriana collectors actively pursue this can due to known design variations that surfaced during its production run. Variations differ primarily in the top header text—with examples bearing designations such as "SUPER 16" or "Golden 16"—as well as minor alterations in brewery mandatory text placement. Among these, the "SUPER 16" version is especially coveted within collector circles for its scarcity compared to standard releases.

The August Schell brand remains a cornerstone of Midwestern breweriana culture, having inspired dedicated collector organizations such as the Schell's Border Batch chapter of the Brewery Collectibles Club of America. This half-quart can serves as an enduring centerpiece for collectors specializing in Minnesota brewing history and regional steel cans.
