Schlitz Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Schlitz 12 Oz Los Angeles Tab Top

The Schlitz Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can hailing from the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company in Los Angeles, California, represents a notable era in American packaging history. Jos. Schlitz, famously recognized for the slogan "The Beer That Made Milwaukee Famous," expanded westward during the post-World War II brewing boom, establishing a major regional facility in the Los Angeles area to serve the growing Pacific market.

Schlitz played a central role in can manufacturing history as one of the earliest major brewing giants to adopt self-opening tab lids nationwide. Cans originating from the Southern California facility carried mandatory brewery statements that specifically designated Los Angeles as the canning location.

For collectors, cans associated with the Los Angeles plant exhibit diverse manufacturer and graphic variations. Depending on the production run, mandatory brewery text alternates between single-city Los Angeles labeling and multi-city plant rosters. Other known variations include shifts in metallic background luster, can seam construction, trademark notations, and transitions between steel can bodies with aluminum ends and all-aluminum formats.

As artifacts of California's industrial brewing footprint and the nationwide reach of the historic Schlitz brand, these cans remain staple pieces in vintage breweriana collections.
