Schlitz Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Schlitz Winston-Salem Tab Top Can

The Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company 12-ounce tab top can bearing the Winston-Salem, North Carolina mandatory statement captures a defining chapter of post-war industrial expansion in American brewing history. Known for decades by the famous slogan, "The Beer That Made Milwaukee Famous," Schlitz expanded operations nationwide to satisfy surging demand across the Southeastern United States. The company established a massive brewing and packaging complex in Winston-Salem, which ranked among the largest and most advanced production facilities constructed in the nation during that era.

For breweriana collectors, this 12-ounce can is an iconic example of mid-century corporate design and regional production history. The exterior graphics feature the traditional Schlitz aesthetic, anchored by the belted rhombus insignia, italicized typography, and metallic background elements. The can side panels feature the mandatory brewery city listings documenting Schlitz's multi-plant network, with Winston-Salem highlighted among the company's major packaging hubs.

Known variations exist across manufacturing runs from this plant. Collectors catalog differences in factory dot placements above the Winston-Salem listing, mandatory text arrangements, lid stampings, and side-seam construction styles. Because the Winston-Salem plant operated under the Jos. Schlitz name prior to the facility's transition following the 1982 acquisition by the Stroh Brewery Company, cans bearing this specific North Carolina brewery line serve as important historical markers of twentieth-century Southern brewing.
