Schlitz Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Schlitz 12 Oz Tab Top Can

The Schlitz Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can, produced by the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, holds an influential place in American breweriana history. Schlitz served as an early national pioneer in the transition to self-opening can designs, playing a central role in popularizing modern container innovation during an era when canned beer rapidly expanded its market share.

Visual Design and Branding

The can's lithography showcases classic mid-century Jos. Schlitz branding. It prominently features the flowing, italicized Schlitz script logotype set against contrasting background bands, accompanied by the brewery's famous slogan: "The Beer That Made Milwaukee Famous". The label also incorporates traditional heraldic crests tied to the company's celebrated "Real Gusto" marketing era, making it one of the most recognizable graphic designs in American brewing history.

Manufacturing and Collector Variations

Due to nationwide distribution and high production volume, collectors recognize several variations of this can:

• Mandatory City Listings: As Jos. Schlitz operated brewing facilities across the country, side-panel mandatory text lines were updated to include regional facilities—such as Tampa, Los Angeles, Longview, and Memphis—alongside the primary Milwaukee headquarters.
• Material and Can Construction: Production included shifts in metal composition, encompassing all-aluminum containers as well as steel-bodied cans fitted with aluminum tops, alongside different side-seam manufacturing methods.
• Manufacturer Hallmarks: Container suppliers, including the American Can Company and Continental Can Company, produced batches featuring distinct factory stamps, seam marks, and vanity lid embossings.
• Text Adjustments: Minor variations exist across regional distribution runs, including subtle adjustments to mandatory legal text and state tax markings.
