Schlitz Beer 16 Oz Tab Top Can

Schlitz 16 Oz Tab Top Beer Can

The Schlitz Beer 16 Oz Tab Top Can represents a notable era in American brewing history from the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Marketed as a "tall boy" or "half-quart" container, this pint-sized package provided an expanded graphic surface to showcase the company's historic slogan, "The Beer That Made Milwaukee Famous".

Graphic Design and Branding

The visual layout of the 16-ounce can centers around the traditional Schlitz belted rhombus emblem featuring its distinctive cursive script. Emblazoned against a metallic background, the label prominently indicated the 16-fluid-ounce volume and reinforced the brewery's Milwaukee heritage. The clean, bold typography was engineered to command attention on retail shelves during a period of intense market competition among major national brewing companies.

Production and Regional Variations

As the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company expanded into one of the largest brewing operations in the country, packaging operations spread across a nationwide network of satellite facilities. Consequently, breweriana collectors track several variations of this container defined by mandatory plant statements. Different manufacturing runs feature varying combinations of brewery city listings along the side panels, representing operations in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Tampa, Florida; Longview, Texas; Los Angeles, California; Memphis, Tennessee; and Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Beyond regional city statements, collectors distinguish variations by differences in metal composition—including all-steel and aluminum body constructions—as well as minor alterations in seam fabrication, text positioning, and lid stamping.

Packaging Legacy

Jos. Schlitz was among the early industry adopters of modernized convenience canning formats. This large-format container stands as an essential reference in breweriana history, capturing the brewery's geographic footprint and mid-century industrial distribution.
