Schlitz Beer Crowntainer

The Famous Schlitz Crowntainer

Produced for the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the Schlitz Beer Crowntainer represents an iconic chapter in mid-century American breweriana. Schlitz, widely recognized by its legendary slogan "The Beer That Made Milwaukee Famous," was an industry titan during this era, frequently battling for the title of the nation's top-selling beer brand.

Manufactured by the Crown Cork & Seal Company, this can features the classic Schlitz branding centered around the company's distinguished script lettering and belted globe trademark. The design reflects the mid-century aesthetic that the brewery utilized across its extensive national marketing campaigns.

For breweriana collectors, Schlitz Crowntainers are notable for their production nuances. Variations exist across different manufacturing runs, reflecting federal packaging shifts such as the presence or absence of the Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statement, along with slight text changes in mandatory brewery statements and distribution markings. Because Schlitz maintained expansive nationwide distribution, these cans reached taverns and households across the country, serving as a staple of post-Prohibition brewing culture. Today, it stands as a quintessential piece for collectors specializing in historic Milwaukee breweries and Crown Cork & Seal manufacturing history.
