Schlitz Beer Test Can

Stroh's Schlitz Beer Test Can

The Schlitz Beer Test Can from Stroh in Detroit, Michigan, represents a significant chapter in late twentieth-century American breweriana. Following the landmark acquisition of the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company by Detroit-based Stroh Brewery Company, packaging designers and marketing teams developed prototype and test designs to explore refreshed visual branding for the storied label.

Historical Context

In the early 1980s, Stroh expanded rapidly from a prominent regional powerhouse into the nation's third-largest brewing company through its takeover of Schlitz. As part of efforts to revitalize the acquired brand, trial packaging was generated at Stroh's facilities. Test cans of this nature were typically produced in limited sample runs for internal evaluation, distributor presentations, or localized trial market feedback before finalizing large-scale commercial printing plates.

Can Features & Collector Significance

Because test cans bypassed standard high-volume distribution channels, surviving examples are highly sought after by collectors specializing in Midwestern brewing history and transition-era breweriana. Known variations exist that showcase subtle adjustments to typography, background finishes, and mandatory legal text layouts, reflecting different iterations in the design approval process.

Bearing the Stroh Detroit, Michigan designation alongside the classic Schlitz trade name, this test can serves as a tangible artifact linking two major brewing legacies from a transformative era of American beverage manufacturing.
