Schlitz Beer Test Can

Schlitz Beer Test Can Overview

The Schlitz Beer Test Can represents experimental packaging developed for the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. As a major national brewing enterprise, Schlitz routinely collaborated with container manufacturers to test lithographic printing methods, metallic finishes, and graphic layouts prior to committing to full-scale commercial manufacturing runs.

These prototype cans were produced to evaluate visual presentation, typography, and color balance. Brewery art departments and corporate marketing panels used them to examine alternative placements of the trademark belted rhomboid logo and the famous slogan, "The Beer that Made Milwaukee Famous". These trials allowed decision-makers to assess how prospective designs would look under retail store lighting and alongside competing brands on store shelves.

Known variations exist across breweriana collections, documenting different phases of packaging development. These variants showcase differences in mandatory brewery location text, ink saturation, protective coatings, background hues, and alignment guides along the seam. Surviving specimens include assembled sample mockups created for corporate review as well as cans rolled from uncut factory proof sheets.

Because these cans were produced strictly in limited runs for internal review and not intended for commercial retail distribution, the vast majority were discarded once packaging decisions were finalized, making surviving specimens historically significant pieces of breweriana.
