The Schlitz Beer Test Can originates from the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Produced during internal packaging evaluation phases, these prototype and trial cans allowed the brewery to assess experimental lithography, branding layouts, color palettes, and protective metallic coatings prior to approving full-scale commercial manufacturing runs.

During its tenure as a dominant brewing powerhouse in the United States, Schlitz invested heavily in retail visual presentation and marketing design. Prototype cans were commissioned in limited runs to test alterations in typography, modified alignments of the signature belted rhomboid and globe logo, and trial placements of the renowned company slogan, "The Beer That Made Milwaukee Famous". Container manufacturers and brewery design departments also evaluated technical elements such as ink formulations, metallic reflectivity, and specialized exterior lacquer finishes to see how prospective designs appeared under retail lighting.

Surviving specimens in breweriana collections originate from different stages of the development cycle.
