The Schlitz Beer Test Can originates from the historic Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. At the peak of its prominence as one of the largest brewing powerhouses in the United States, Schlitz invested heavily in graphic design research and container development. Before committing updated branding concepts or container specifications to full-scale commercial manufacturing runs, the brewery commissioned experimental mockups and trial batches.

These test cans were developed alongside commercial container manufacturers to evaluate graphic layouts, lithographic printing methods, metallic reflectivity, and protective lacquer finishes. Designers experimented with alterations to the company's trademark belted rhomboid and globe logo, typographic weights, border trim lines, and alternative placements of the famous slogan, "The Beer That Made Milwaukee Famous". Such trial pieces allowed packaging designers and marketing executives to analyze visual contrast, brand recognition, and shelf appeal under standard retail lighting.

Surviving specimens provide tangible insight into the industrial design and graphic evolution of the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company. Variations exist across breweriana circles, exhibiting differences in draft mandatory text, seam alignment marks, experimental color registration bars, and protective coating treatments. Some specimens originated as sample mockups assembled for internal corporate evaluation, while others were preserved from flat lithographed metal proof sheets produced during manufacturing trials.

Because these prototypes were intended exclusively for internal review, mechanical testing, and marketing evaluations rather than retail distribution, most were discarded once final decisions were made.
