Schlitz Beer Test Can

1976 Schlitz Foil Test Can

Produced in 1976 by the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, this straight steel test can represents an experimental packaging phase for one of America's historic brewing powerhouses. During the mid-1970s, Schlitz frequently explored concept designs, prototype finishes, and altered graphics to evaluate shelf impact and brand presentation.

This 12 oz container is distinguished by an applied foil label over a straight steel body rather than standard factory lithography. Foil and paper test labels allowed packaging specialists and marketing teams to quickly evaluate metallic sheens, reflective coatings, and layout revisions prior to committing to full-scale commercial production. The mandatory text on the label lists six brewery cities, documenting the multi-plant production network operated by Schlitz at the time.

Various related foil test cans from this era are known among collectors, featuring differences in background coloring, emblem treatments, and brewery city alignments. Because test cans were produced in restricted sample quantities solely for internal review, focus groups, and corporate evaluations, they were never distributed into standard retail channels. This foil-labeled sample remains an intriguing piece of breweriana documenting packaging development during a notable era in Schlitz's brewing history.
