Schlitz Experimental Test Can

The Schlitz Beer Test Can originates from the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Produced during packaging evaluation phases, test cans allowed the brewery to assess experimental lithography, branding layouts, color palettes, and protective coatings before committing to large-scale commercial production runs.

During its era as a leading American brewing operation, Schlitz placed immense importance on shelf presence and visual branding. Prototype cans were commissioned in limited sample quantities to evaluate modifications to typography, adjustments to the signature belted rhomboid and globe insignia, and alternate placements of the famous slogan, "The Beer That Made Milwaukee Famous". These trial pieces also allowed technicians and artists to evaluate metallic reflectivity, specialized lacquer finishes, and ink formulations under various lighting conditions.

Variations exist among surviving examples, including mockups assembled for executive review and sample cans rolled from flat lithographed proof sheets that never entered commercial packaging lines. These test pieces frequently feature technical manufacturing markers along the seams or rims, such as printer color bars, alignment guides, or draft mandatory text.

Because sample and prototype packaging was created strictly for internal evaluation, marketing focus groups, and container manufacturing trials, most test cans were discarded once design decisions were finalized. Surviving specimens provide breweriana collectors with a direct look into the graphic design evolution and experimental packaging development behind one of Milwaukee's historic brewing powerhouses.
