The Schlitz Beer Test Can was developed by the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as an experimental prototype used to evaluate potential packaging redesigns, metallic finishes, and graphic presentations prior to large-scale commercial distribution. As one of the largest brewing operations in the United States during the twentieth century, Schlitz heavily researched packaging alterations to optimize shelf appeal and consumer brand recognition.

These test cans were manufactured in restricted quantities exclusively for internal brewery reviews, consumer focus groups, and regional trial evaluations. Because they served as developmental prototypes, they were not distributed through regular retail channels. Some surviving specimens were rolled from flat lithographed proof sheets rather than being processed on standard commercial canning lines.

The can features core elements of Schlitz's corporate identity, including the distinctive Schlitz script lettering, signature logo emblems, and experimental color palettes. Packaging designers used these trial runs to test variations in metallic luster, font placement, and the layout of mandatory brewery text.

Variations exist among surviving specimens, reflecting iterative adjustments made during different stages of design testing. These variations showcase slight differences in the placement of the classic slogan "The Beer That Made Milwaukee Famous," background foil finishes, and brewery location text. Because most experimental sample containers were discarded or retained in brewery archives, surviving test cans serve as notable artifacts from the development history of Milwaukee brewing.
