Schlitz Light Special Lager Beer 10 Oz Tab Top Can

Schlitz Light 10 Oz Memphis Tab Top

The Schlitz Light Special Lager Beer 10 Oz Tab Top Can represents a notable entry from the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company during the peak era of the American light beer boom. Produced to compete in the expanding low-calorie beer market, Schlitz Light was marketed under the "Special Lager" designation, presenting a lighter counterpart to the flagship Schlitz recipe.

Memphis Production & Packaging

This can originated from Schlitz's packaging facility in Memphis, Tennessee. During this era, Schlitz distributed products nationwide from multiple regional brewing hubs. To identify the packaging origin, cans featured mandatory city lists where the Memphis location was indicated, often designated with a small plant identification dot above or beside the city name along the seam text.

The 10-ounce volume occupies a distinctive niche in breweriana collections. Positioned between smaller pony cans and standard twelve-ounce packages, ten-ounce cans were targeted at specific regional markets and vending arrangements, making them less ubiquitous than standard capacities.

Can Graphics and Design Elements

The graphic design of the Schlitz Light Special Lager can departs from the traditional solid red-and-white Schlitz palette, employing clean silver, white, and pale blue tones to visually emphasize the light beer category. The classic Schlitz script and prominent "Light" branding take center stage on the label, framed by "Special Lager Beer" typography.

Collector Variations

For breweriana enthusiasts, several variations exist for this package. Differences typically involve the arrangement of the multi-city mandatory lists, can manufacturer markings along the seam, and subtle modifications in lid stamping and rim construction. These variations reflect packaging transitions across different canning suppliers and production runs.
