Schlitz Light Special Lager Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Schlitz Light Special Lager Can

The Schlitz Light Special Lager Beer can represents a pivotal chapter in American brewing history, originating from the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Introduced as the brewery's response to the rapid rise of low-calorie beers during the mid-1970s, this can highlights the historic "Light Beer Wars" where major national brewers competed intensely for market share.

Graphic Design & Branding

The can's artwork was specifically tailored to convey a lighter, crisper alternative to traditional lagers while retaining the storied legacy of "The Beer That Made Milwaukee Famous." The layout features the classic Schlitz script prominently positioned alongside the brand's iconic globe crest and the specific designation "Special Lager Beer." The color palette incorporates crisp white and cool blue tones accented with metallic silver trim, setting it apart visually from the standard brown and red palettes used on full-calorie Schlitz packaging.

Manufacturing & Collector Variations

Because Jos. Schlitz operated multiple production plants across the United States, several variations of this can exist in the collecting community. Notable differences primarily appear in the mandatory text along the seam, which lists various brewery locations such as Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Tampa, Florida; Longview, Texas; Winston-Salem, North Carolina; and Los Angeles, California. Additionally, variations in lid styles, rim finishes, and canning manufacturer codes (such as American Can Company and Continental Can Company) provide diverse avenues of study for breweriana collectors.

Today, the Schlitz Light Special Lager can stands as an important artifact of late-twentieth-century industrial package design and major-label brand diversification.
