Brewery & Production Context

The Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company expanded its nationwide brewing footprint by establishing a major facility in Memphis to serve the mid-South and national distribution networks. Cans originating from or listing this facility carry the Memphis, Tennessee city designation on the side panel or plant list, distinguishing them on regional breweriana checklists.

Packaging & Design Characteristics

The 8-ounce format—often referred to among collectors as a "split" or "pony" size—was promoted as a quick-chilling, convenient serving option. The can features the signature Schlitz Light branding, displaying the traditional Schlitz script logo alongside the red crest emblem against a clean light blue and white background palette. The mandatory text confirms the 8-fluid-ounce volume along with the Jos. Schlitz brewing details.

Collector Variations & Significance

Within breweriana collecting, fractional cans from major national light beer rollouts hold a dedicated following. Collectors recognize various manufacturing differences on these cans, including slight adjustments to the mandatory plant listings, distributor notations, rim profiles, and seam constructions. Because Jos. Schlitz utilized multiple manufacturing lines across the country, examples featuring the Memphis plant designation are sought after by collectors specializing in Tennessee breweriana as well as those completing comprehensive Schlitz brand sets.
