Schlitz Malt Lager 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Schlitz Malt Lager Tab Top

The Schlitz Malt Lager 12 oz tab top can represents a fascinating chapter in American brewing history and regulatory compliance. Produced by the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, this container was created to navigate specific state alcohol labeling and advertising statutes.

Regulatory Origins

During the peak distribution of Schlitz's popular malt beverage line, certain states—most notably North Carolina and Virginia—enforced strict beverage control laws that restricted or outright prohibited using the word "Liquor" on malt beverage packaging and advertising. To legally distribute the product in these jurisdictions without violating local laws, Jos. Schlitz substituted "Lager" in place of "Liquor," producing the distinct "Schlitz Malt Lager" label specifically for those markets.

Design and Variations

The can mirrors the recognizable aesthetic of its malt liquor counterpart, featuring the signature bull iconography set against a bold background, with "Malt Lager" prominently displayed on the face.

For breweriana collectors, several variations of the 12 oz tab top can are documented. These differences include:

• Embossing: Versions exist with embossed metallic elements as well as flat, non-embossed printings.
• Mandatory Brewery Text: Cans can be found listing solely the Milwaukee headquarters or multiple brewery branch cities operated by Jos. Schlitz.
• Tax Stamps: Examples frequently feature state-specific tax stamps stamped or printed on the lids, reflecting their targeted regional distribution.
• Side Panel Text: Variations include differences in side story panels, contents statements, and copyright notations.

Due to its targeted regional distribution and the legal peculiarities that brought it to life, the Schlitz Malt Lager can remains a prized specialty piece among breweriana enthusiasts and can historians.
