Schlitz Malt Lager 8 Oz Tab Top Can

Schlitz 8 Oz Malt Lager Tab Top

The Schlitz Malt Lager 8 Oz Tab Top Can is a notable regional variant produced by the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. While the brewery's primary nationwide brand was marketed as "Schlitz Malt Liquor," certain states—such as Virginia and North Carolina—prohibited the word "Liquor" on malt beverage containers and promotional materials. To maintain distribution in these areas without violating local statutes, Schlitz substituted the word "Lager" for "Liquor" on the label.

The can features the classic Schlitz script alongside the famous bull emblem that defined the company's malt beverage branding. The compact 8-ounce container served as a smaller single-serving format.

Collectors recognize several variations of this can from different manufacturing runs. These variations differ in mandatory brewery city listings, tax stamp markings, and subtle graphic alterations. Because distribution of the Malt Lager wording was confined strictly to states with restrictive alcohol naming regulations, this can serves as an intriguing example of regulatory-driven breweriana history.
