Schlitz Malt Liquor 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Stroh Schlitz Malt Liquor Can

This 12 oz tab top can represents an important transitional chapter in American brewing history, pairing the iconic Schlitz Malt Liquor brand with The Stroh Brewery Company's manufacturing operations in Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania.

Historical Context

During the industry consolidations of the early 1980s, Detroit-based Stroh underwent rapid expansion. After acquiring the F. & M. Schaefer Brewing Company's state-of-the-art Lehigh Valley facility in Fogelsville, Pennsylvania, Stroh completed a buyout of the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company. Following the takeover, Stroh shifted production of flagship Schlitz labels across its national network of modern regional breweries. Cans bearing the Lehigh Valley mandatory line serve as tangible artifacts of this major industry realignment.

Can Design & Iconography

The exterior graphics feature the brand's quintessential mascot: the bold blue charging bull. Popularized across television and print advertising with taglines like "Bull, Not Beer," the bull emblem remains one of the most recognizable symbols in malt liquor breweriana. The can layout combines the prominent bull illustration, the classic Schlitz script logotype, and bold metallic background elements typical of late-era tab top production.

Collector Notes & Variations

For breweriana collectors focusing on mandatory lines and brewery lineage, the Stroh Lehigh Valley attribution is a key identifier. Cans produced under Stroh's ownership replaced earlier Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company city listings, making them distinctive from earlier Milwaukee, Tampa, or Longview issues. Variations of this can exist among collectors, featuring differences in factory canning codes, text formatting along the mandatory side panel, and minor adjustments to the metallic ink tones.
