Schlitz Malt Liquor 16 Oz Tab Top Can

Schlitz Malt Liquor 16 Oz Can

Produced by the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the 16-ounce Schlitz Malt Liquor can represents one of the most recognizable graphic presentations in American breweriana. Adorned with the brewery's famous charging bull mascot, this pint-sized container is a centerpiece of Schlitz's legendary "The Bull" branding.

Background and Graphic Design

Schlitz Malt Liquor established a formidable presence in the malt liquor market, propelled by high-energy advertising campaigns that positioned the bull emblem as a major pop-culture symbol. The 16-ounce container provides an expanded canvas for the bold typography and the bull illustration. The layout pairs the classic Schlitz script with stark, contrasting colors that made the can immediately stand out on retail shelves.

Collector Variations and Details

For breweriana collectors, this 16-ounce can presents several notable elements of study:

• Brewery City Mandatories: Because Jos. Schlitz operated multiple packaging facilities across the country, examples of this can feature varying brewery location lines. These range from single-city Milwaukee markings to expanded multi-city rosters encompassing regional facilities such as Tampa, Longview, Los Angeles, and Winston-Salem.
• Text and Labeling Alterations: Variations exist in the placement and phrasing of statutory statements, alcohol content notices, and state tax stamps, reflecting the diverse distribution regulations across different markets.
• Graphic Differences: Minor differences in the bull graphic's outline, color density, and metallic background finishes appear across different manufacturing runs.

As a prominent 16-ounce display piece showcasing one of the brewing industry's most recognizable mascots, this can remains a staple item for collectors of Milwaukee brewing heritage and classic malt liquor memorabilia.
