Schlitz Malt Liquor 8 Oz Tab Top Can

The 8 oz Schlitz Malt Liquor Can

Produced by the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the 8-ounce Schlitz Malt Liquor tab top can represents a well-recognized entry in breweriana collecting. The can prominently features the brand's famous charging bull emblem, a mascot closely tied to Schlitz's national advertising campaign that urged consumers: "Don't say beer, say Bull!"

Small-Format Packaging

During the tab top era, major American brewers marketed eight-ounce "pony" cans as a compact alternative to standard twelve-ounce packages. Because malt liquor was brewed with a higher alcohol content than standard American lagers, the eight-ounce format offered an appealing single-serving portion designed to stay chilled until finished.

Graphic Design and Variations

The can's visual layout highlights the classic Schlitz script paired with the bold malt liquor bull graphic against a metallic background. Because Jos. Schlitz operated multiple brewing facilities across the United States to supply nationwide distribution, collectors document multiple variations of this can. Differences between production runs include varying lists of manufacturing cities (including Milwaukee, Tampa, Longview, Los Angeles, Memphis, and Winston-Salem), alterations in mandatory tax and regulatory text, and differences in pull-tab lid stamping.

Breweriana Significance

As a prominent example of small-format malt liquor packaging from one of the historical giants of American brewing, the eight-ounce Schlitz Malt Liquor can remains a popular fixture on display shelves for collectors specializing in malt liquor brands, odd-sized containers, and mid-century graphic design.
