Schlitz Malt Liquor 8 Oz Tab Top Can

Schlitz Malt Liquor 8 Oz Can

The Schlitz Malt Liquor 8 Oz Tab Top Can is a classic piece of breweriana produced by the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The can prominently features the brand's iconic charging bull emblem, a mascot that became a fixture in national marketing campaigns under the famous slogan, "Don't say beer, say Bull!"

Packaging and Format

During the tab top era, American brewers frequently packaged malt liquor in compact eight-ounce cans, commonly referred to among collectors as "ponies" or "shorties". Because malt liquor was brewed with a higher alcohol content than standard lagers, the smaller eight-ounce size provided a practical single-serving portion designed to remain chilled until finished.

Manufacturing and Design Variations

Because Jos. Schlitz operated brewing facilities nationwide, collectors document multiple variations of this can. Differences across production runs include mandatory text changes, manufacturer markings, top lid stamping differences, and varying combinations of brewery location listings (including Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Tampa, Florida; Longview, Texas; Los Angeles, California; Memphis, Tennessee; and Winston-Salem, North Carolina).

A notable regional development involved states with restrictive alcohol labeling regulations, such as North Carolina and Virginia, which prohibited the word "Liquor" on beverage packaging. To comply with local statutes without altering the underlying brand identity, Schlitz distributed regional versions in the same eight-ounce format bearing the alternate title "Malt Lager" alongside the recognizable bull insignia.

Breweriana Significance

As a classic example of small-format malt liquor packaging from one of Milwaukee's historic brewing giants, this can remains a popular focus for collectors specializing in odd-sized containers and mid-century graphic design.
