Schlitz Stout Malt Liquor 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Schlitz Stout Malt Liquor Can

Produced by the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company at their Los Angeles, California packaging facility, this 12-ounce container represents a notable chapter in the marketing history of the iconic "Bull" malt liquor brand.

Design and Iconography

The can features the prominent Schlitz charging bull emblem, a symbol that became synonymous with the brand's bold advertising campaigns throughout the era. Set against a metallic background with striking red and black contrast typography, the design clearly designates the beverage as "Stout Malt Liquor". The visual layout was engineered to catch the eye on retail shelves, utilizing strong graphic lines and the classic Jos. Schlitz script alongside the aggressive bull trademark.

Regional Identification and Variations

For collectors of breweriana, this specific issue is distinguished by its Los Angeles origin. Mandatory brewery text printed along the seam area designates production from the Los Angeles plant, often denoted with a city indicator dot or a regional multi-city mandatory line. Collectors track several variations of this label, featuring slight shifts in mandatory text layout, differences in can manufacturer markings, and variations in alcohol statement inclusion depending on state distribution regulations.

Manufacturing and Brewery Context

The Jos. Schlitz brewery in Los Angeles played a key role in West Coast distribution for the company's expanding portfolio during the height of malt liquor's popularity. Containers produced at this regional facility helped Schlitz compete directly against rival malt liquors across western markets. The design remains an enduring favorite among collectors specializing in California brewery issues, malt liquor labels, and animal-themed breweriana graphics.
