Schlitz Stout Malt Liquor 24 Oz Stay Top Can

Schlitz Stout 24 Oz Stay Top Can

The Schlitz Stout Malt Liquor 24 Oz Stay Top Can represents a classic piece of large-format breweriana produced for the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Positioned prominently in the American malt liquor market, Schlitz packaged this offering under its famous bull branding, which became a cultural touchstone throughout the brand's expansive advertising campaigns.

Branding and Heritage

Schlitz introduced its malt liquor portfolio to offer a bolder alternative to its standard flagship lagers. The packaging prominently displays the iconic charging bull motif, a design element originally inspired by a prize bull named Prince from the Uihlein family farm. The label’s "Stout" designation distinguishes it within the brewery's broader malt liquor catalog, paired with bold typography and contrasting metallic colors that characterized Schlitz's promotional push.

Production and Label Variations

To meet consumer demand for single-serve oversized packaging, Schlitz utilized the 24-ounce format across its distribution footprint. Because Jos. Schlitz operated breweries across several states—such as facilities in Milwaukee, Los Angeles, Tampa, Longview, and Memphis—the side panels of these cans featured different city mandatory lists depending on where the beverage was packaged.

Known variations exist across manufacturing runs, created by different container suppliers such as American Can Company, Continental Can Company, and National Can Corporation. Collectors also observe label differences in mandatory alcohol text, plant production codes, and minor ink variations in the bull emblem and background coloring.

Breweriana Significance

Oversized 24-ounce cans hold a dedicated following among malt liquor and breweriana enthusiasts. The combination of the storied Jos. Schlitz name, the bold animal mascot graphics, and the distinctive "Stout Malt Liquor" branding makes this can a notable representative of Milwaukee brewing history.
