Schmidt Beer Flat Top Can

Schmidt Scenic Lake Flat Top

This vintage flat top can was produced for Schmidt Beer under the Pfeiffer Brewing Company operating as Jacob Schmidt Brewing Co. in St. Paul, Minnesota. It represents part of Schmidt's celebrated mid-century pictorial can releases, which firmly tied the brand's identity to the outdoors and sportsmanship of the upper Midwest.

Outdoor Heritage and Artwork

The lower portion of the can features an elaborate wraparound scenic landscape created in collaboration with celebrated Minnesota wildlife artist Les Kouba. Kouba’s artwork depicts a tranquil pine-fringed lake scene contrasting traditional and modern angling methods: a figure fishing from a canoe alongside modern boat fishermen, accompanied by jumping game fish breaking the water's surface.

Running along the bottom rim is Schmidt's enduring regional marketing slogan: "The Brew That Grew with the Great Northwest". The top half displays the traditional red Schmidt shield outlined in metallic gold framing bold white typography, creating a distinct two-tone contrast between the classic corporate branding and the naturalistic painting below.

Production Context

During the mid-20th century, the Jacob Schmidt Brewing Company was acquired by Detroit-based Pfeiffer Brewing Co., which preserved the historic St. Paul brewery and the popular Schmidt brand name. Cans from this era reflect that corporate transition in their mandatory brewery text while expanding Schmidt's wildlife and scenic advertising campaign across various flat top packaging runs.
