Schmidt Beer Flat Top Can

Schmidt Rodeo Scene Flat Top

This flat top can was produced in St. Paul, Minnesota, under the mandatory statement designating Pfeiffer Brewing Company doing business as Jacob Schmidt Brewing Company. In 1954, Detroit-based Pfeiffer acquired the historic Jacob Schmidt brewery along West Seventh Street in Saint Paul. Rather than replace the local identity, Pfeiffer maintained the iconic Schmidt trade name, catering directly to loyal consumers across the Upper Midwest.

Schmidt built a celebrated regional following by highlighting outdoor recreation, wildlife, and frontier imagery across its packaging. Anchoring this marketing strategy was the brand's long-running slogan, "The Beer That Grew with the Great Northwest," which is printed along the bottom rim of the can.

The label artwork showcases an action-filled Western rodeo theme. A cowboy in a blue work shirt rides a bucking horse inside an arena while spectators in hats observe from a white wooden corral fence against distant desert mesa bluffs. In the left foreground, a gloved rider holds a richly tooled, embossed Western stock saddle. Above the scenic illustration sits the classic red Schmidt crest outlined with a metallic gold band and crisp white lettering.

Among breweriana collectors, Schmidt's scenic flat tops are widely admired for their dynamic full-color illustrations. Examples carrying the Pfeiffer-era mandatory text represent an important period of corporate consolidation in Minnesota brewing history, documenting the transition between independent operation and subsequent corporate mergers.
