Schmidt Beer Flat Top Can

Schmidt Northwest Scenic Flat Top

During the era when Detroit-based Associated Brewing Company managed the historic St. Paul, Minnesota facility—operating as a "doing business as" (DBA) entity under the Jacob Schmidt name—the brewery continued its iconic regional marketing campaign celebrating the rugged outdoors of the Upper Midwest.

This 12-ounce flat top can features one of the distinctive scenic themes in the brewery's long-running pictorial line. The panel depicts a vast open-pit iron ore mine, complete with haul trucks, excavators, and trains evoking northern Minnesota's historic Mesabi Range mining operations. Overlooking the industrial landscape from the left is the profile of a bear. The bottom of the artwork is anchored by the brewery's famous regional slogan declaring the brand as the one "that Grew with the Great Northwest".

Schmidt's scenic series began during the flat top era before expanding into subsequent zip top and pull tab generations. These flat top variations are distinguished by their metallic gold borders outlining the central red Schmidt shield and lower pictorial vignette. Across production runs, can manufacturers such as Continental Can Company and American Can Company produced variations showing subtle differences in mandatory wording, font weights, and maker marks.
