Schmidt Beer Flat Top Can

Schmidt Wildlife Scenic Flat Top

This flat top can represents the mid-twentieth-century scenic outdoor series produced for Schmidt Beer under the mandatory statement designating Associated Brewing Company doing business as Jacob Schmidt Brewing Company (Associated DBA Jac. Sch.) in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Outdoor Heritage and Artwork

Schmidt built a devoted following across the Upper Midwest by anchoring its marketing in hunting, fishing, and wilderness heritage. Billed under the famous regional slogan, "The Brew That Grew with the Great Northwest," the brand regularly showcased Northwoods sporting motifs. The artwork on this can—rooted in wildlife illustrations created for the brewery by celebrated Minnesota wildlife artist Les Kouba—depicts Chinese ring-necked pheasants flushing from a harvested cornfield beneath a red Schmidt heraldic shield.

Corporate Consolidation Era

The Jacob Schmidt Brewing Company, historically operating out of its landmark castle-style facility on West Seventh Street in Saint Paul, underwent ownership transitions during the post-war era of American brewing consolidation. After Detroit-based Associated Brewing Company acquired the operations, canning lines retained the established Jacob Schmidt trade identity to maintain brand loyalty among Midwestern sportsmen and consumers. The "Associated DBA Jac. Sch." text serves as an important indicator separating these mid-century releases from earlier independent issues and subsequent packaging changes following later corporate mergers.

Collector Notes

Collectors of regional scenic cans document minor variations across production runs, including shifts in text layout, variations in manufacturer marks, and differences in lacquer shading on the metallic inks.
