Schmidt Beer Flat Top Can

Schmidt Great Northwest Flat Top

Originating from St. Paul, Minnesota, this vintage flat top can highlights an iconic era of regional brewing heritage under Associated Brewing Company, operating under the trade name of the historic Jacob Schmidt Brewing Company. Schmidt positioned its identity squarely around the rugged outdoors, wilderness heritage, and regional pride of the Upper Midwest, anchored by its famous slogan, "The Beer that Grew with the Great Northwest."

The lower label features a scenic panorama originally commissioned from celebrated Minnesota wildlife and outdoor artist Les Kouba. The illustration juxtaposes frontier history with modern progress, depicting a covered Conestoga wagon crossing prairie grasslands on the left alongside a streamlined diesel passenger train rounding a curve on the right, divided by a winding river against rolling hills. Above the landscape sits the traditional Schmidt heraldic emblem, featuring crisp white lettering inside a bold red and gold crest.

Cans bearing the "Associated DBA Jac. Sch." mandatory line mark a key transitional period following the acquisition of the Jacob Schmidt brewery, preserving the classic St. Paul brand identity on store shelves before later corporate consolidations. Known variations from this production era feature minor shifts in mandatory text layout, differences in can manufacturer marks, and subtle changes in metallic ink application.
