Schmidt Extra Special Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Schmidt Extra Special Tab Top Can

The Schmidt Extra Special Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can reflects a pivotal period for the Jacob Schmidt Brewing Company of St. Paul, Minnesota. Schmidt, long celebrated across the Upper Midwest under its iconic slogan "The Brew That Grew With The Great Northwest," built a major regional presence through its outdoorsman-themed marketing and distinctive packaging.

Following corporate changes that placed Jacob Schmidt under the Associated Brewing Company umbrella, production cans were updated to carry the mandatory text designating the brewer as "Jac. Schmidt Div. of Assoc." in St. Paul. The "Extra Special" designation was a key product line for the brewery, maintaining strong shelf visibility alongside Schmidt's well-known scenic and wildlife can series.

Design and Collector Significance

The can's graphic layout incorporates the traditional Schmidt brand identity, featuring bold crest iconography, classic serif typography, and metallic gold accents framing the main label and mandatory panels. For breweriana collectors, cans bearing the Associated Brewing Company divisional credit serve as notable physical artifacts documenting the consolidation of heritage Midwest breweries during the tab top era.

Known variations exist among production runs of this label, with differences typically tied to specific can manufacturing stamps—such as those from American Can Company or Continental Can Company—and subtle shifts in mandatory text layout and legal phrasing along the seam.
