Schmidt's Beer Cone Top Can

Detroit's Schmidt's Beer Cone Top

The Schmidt's Beer cone top represents an important chapter in Detroit's brewing heritage. Canned by the Schmidt Brewing Company of Detroit, Michigan, this container comes from a distinct local operation that is separate from other well-known breweries bearing the Schmidt moniker in Saint Paul and Philadelphia.

Design and Manufacturer Details

Produced by the Continental Can Company, this high-profile container is distinguished by bold typography set against metallic silver, gold, and vibrant red graphics. The front display features prominent marketing slogans, such as "This Is Our Finest Beer" and explicit declarations stating "No Sugar No Glucose Added". Select versions also feature a distinctive emblem referencing the proprietary "WALSNEK Process," a trademarked brewing method highlighted across Detroit Schmidt packaging.

Distribution and Known Variations

While brewed and packaged in Detroit, Schmidt's Beer enjoyed significant regional distribution across the Midwest. As a result, surviving examples are frequently discovered with Ohio state tax stamps embossed or stamped onto their caps or lids alongside standard Michigan distribution.

Known variations exist across canning runs, reflecting subtle design shifts throughout the brand's lifespan. These differences include modifications to mandatory legal phrasing, tax payment statements, minor label dimension adjustments, and slight variations in the metallic background bands.

For breweriana enthusiasts focused on Midwestern brewing history, the Detroit Schmidt's container remains a standout piece representing the city's independent brewing industry before production consolidated into larger regional operations.
