Schmidt's City Club Beer Cone Top Can

City Club Cone Top Can Overview

The Schmidt's City Club Beer Cone Top Can represents a hallmark piece of Upper Midwest brewing heritage, produced for the Jacob Schmidt Brewing Company of Saint Paul, Minnesota. Schmidt's, operating from its historic brewery site in Saint Paul's West Seventh Street neighborhood, established City Club as its signature flagship label following the repeal of Prohibition.

Brewery Heritage and Distribution

During the height of regional brewing competition, the Jacob Schmidt Brewing Company packaged its popular City Club brand in cone top cans manufactured primarily by the Continental Can Company. During the World War II era, brewery leadership secured government contracts that enabled Schmidt to supply canned beer directly to military personnel. City Club served as the cornerstone of the company's regional market presence throughout Minnesota and neighboring states before the brand was phased out following Schmidt's acquisition by Pfeiffer Brewing.

Graphic Design and Variations

For breweriana collectors, the City Club cone top is notable for its bold mid-century graphic layout, showcasing the prominent City Club crest and clean typography set against contrasting red and white backgrounds with metallic accents. Multiple variations of the can exist in collector circles, primarily distinguished by differences in regulatory and mandatory tax text. These variations include differences in Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) designations, varying state-mandated alcohol content disclosures (such as specific alcohol-by-weight statements), and subtle adjustments in brewery mandatory wording.

The Schmidt's City Club cone top remains a prized artifact of Saint Paul brewing history, serving as an important predecessor to the brewery's subsequent scenic can releases.
