Schmidt's City Club Beer Flat Top Can

City Club Flat Top Heritage

The Schmidt's City Club Beer flat top can is a prominent artifact from the Jacob Schmidt Brewing Company of Saint Paul, Minnesota. Operating out of the iconic "Castle" brewery on West Seventh Street, Schmidt established City Club as a flagship brand, famously promoting it with slogans such as "Tops in any Town" and "On Tap in Cans or Bottles".

As canned packaging gained rapid adoption across the Upper Midwest brewing landscape, Schmidt packaged City Club in flat top containers to compete with regional rivals like Theodore Hamm. Early production runs featured the American Can Company "Keglined" branding and instructional side panels.

The can's visual presentation centers on bold City Club typography and heraldic crest elements set against contrasting background tones and metallic trim. Collectors recognize variations across different production runs, distinguished by changes in regulatory and mandatory tax text—such as Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statements—differing state alcohol declarations, and subtle revisions to manufacturer markings.

Following ownership shifts when the Jacob Schmidt Brewing Company was acquired by Pfeiffer Brewing Company, the City Club brand was gradually retired in favor of the brewery's well-known scenic wildlife can line. Today, the City Club flat top remains a celebrated piece of Minnesota brewing heritage.
