Schmidt's First Premium Lager

Manufactured for the K. G. Schmidt Brewing Company of Logansport, Indiana, the Schmidt's First Premium Lager Beer cone top can represents an iconic mid-century design from the Hoosier State's brewing history.

Graphic Features and Design

The can features a distinctive illustration of a finely dressed gentleman holding up a cone top can, serving as the central motif of the label. A key identifying attribute of this specific variation is the date "1877" printed directly to the left of the figure, paying homage to the historic roots of the Schmidt brewing heritage. The front and side panels prominently display the "Schmidt's First Premium Lager Beer" branding alongside the required Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statement.

Historical Context

The K. G. Schmidt Brewing Company operated in Logansport following the repeal of Prohibition, continuing production until the early 1950s. During its post-repeal run, the brewery utilized Continental Can Company's high-profile cone top containers for its premier lager. Several variations of the brand's cone tops exist among collector circles, distinguished by minor differences in text placement, mandatory statements, and background detailing relative to the central character artwork. Today, this can remains a sought-after piece of regional Indiana breweriana.
