Schmidt's Light Beer Quart

Schmidt's Light Beer Quart Cone

Produced by C. Schmidt & Sons in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the Schmidt's Light Beer quart can represents a prominent large-format release from one of the Mid-Atlantic's historic brewing giants. As Philadelphia's preeminent brewing powerhouse, Schmidt's packaged its light lager in 32-ounce Continental Can Company "Cap Sealed" cone top cans to serve home consumption and tavern trade.

The graphic presentation of the can showcases Schmidt's traditional serif typography and heraldic crest set against a metallic silver background, closely tied to the imagery the brewery popularized in regional advertising under the "Silver Noggin" moniker. The substantial quart surface area provides an expansive canvas for the brewery's trademark mid-century livery and mandatory brewery statements.

Collectors recognize variations across production batches of this quart. These differences include lithographic finishes that range from a dull matte gray to brighter reflective silver, as well as variations bearing the mandatory "Internal Revenue Tax Paid" (IRTP) statement compared to later post-tax-statement print runs. Because 32-ounce cans were filled in significantly smaller volumes than standard twelve-ounce containers, surviving examples of the Schmidt's Light Beer quart are especially prized among regional breweriana collectors.
