Schultz Quality Ale Flat Top Can

Union City Schultz Quality Ale

The Schultz Quality Ale flat top can is an elusive piece of East Coast breweriana, originating from the Schultz Brewing Company in Union City, New Jersey. Emerging from a municipality historically recognized for its dense concentration of independent brewing ventures, Schultz operated in the competitive post-Prohibition New Jersey market before closing operations. Because the brewery operated for only a brief period during the early era of canned beer packaging, relatively little of its canned output survived, elevating this label among regional and vintage ale can specialists.

Visual Profile and Characteristics

The container features bold industrial typography paired with clean, traditional graphic elements that highlight the brand's focus on quality branding. The prominent "Schultz Quality Ale" titling across the face is accompanied by period-standard mandatory text referencing the Union City facility. Variations across preserved Schultz cans exhibit subtle differences in mandatory phrasing and canning line text, reflecting the evolving regulatory and packaging practices of early commercial canning.

Collector Significance

Due to the brewery’s brief lifespan, Schultz cans serve as cornerstone pieces in collections dedicated to New Jersey industrial history and early American ale brands. While larger regional and national shipping breweries captured widespread distribution during the period, local producers like Schultz document the vibrant brewing landscape that flourished along the Hudson Palisades. Today, surviving examples remain sought-after centerpieces in advanced breweriana collections.
