Schwegmann Premium Light Lager Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Schwegmann Supermarket Lager Can

The Schwegmann Premium Light Lager Beer 12 oz tab top can represents a fascinating crossover between regional brewing and Louisiana retail lore. Packaged under trade names such as Premium in New Orleans, Louisiana, this label was produced as a proprietary house brand for Schwegmann Brothers Giant Super Markets.

Schwegmann Brothers was a legendary grocery chain founded in the New Orleans area by John G. Schwegmann. Schwegmann became a prominent consumer advocate who took the liquor industry's price-fixing practices all the way to the United States Supreme Court. The landmark 1951 decision in Schwegmann Bros. v. Calvert Distillers Corp. struck down fair-trade pricing regulations, helping pave the way for retailers nationwide to discount alcohol and private-label packaged goods directly to consumers.

Schwegmann supermarkets were renowned for their massive retail spaces and in-store amenities, which famously included the "Shopper's Bar," allowing customers to enjoy a cold beer while walking the grocery aisles. Private-label cans like Schwegmann Premium Light Lager were central to the company's identity of providing quality goods at discount prices.

For breweriana collectors, this can remains a notable Gulf Coast regional piece. Multiple variations exist across production runs, showing subtle differences in brewery mandatory text, seam designs, and can manufacturer stamps.
