Sebewaing Beer 12 Oz Zip Top Can

The Sebewaing Beer 12 oz zip top can represents a notable chapter in the history of Michigan's Thumb region brewing heritage. Manufactured by the National Can Company for the Sebewaing Brewing Company of Sebewaing, Michigan, this can was introduced during the brewery's final decade of operation before the plant permanently shuttered in 1966.

Brewery Background and Context

Operating in the small village of Sebewaing along Saginaw Bay, the Sebewaing Brewing Company traced its roots back to 1880. For decades, it remained a fiercely independent regional brewery catering primarily to local agricultural communities and taverns across Michigan's Thumb. In an effort to keep pace with modern packaging trends during the 1960s, Sebewaing adopted zip top cans alongside its traditional bottled lines.

Can Graphics and Features

The 12 oz can features Sebewaing's mid-century blue background, a shift from earlier cream and yellow designs that featured the iconic pheasant motif. The face prominently displays the bold Sebewaing script along with text highlighting the use of deep rock well water. Variations of the can exist among collectors, reflecting subtle differences in mandatory statements, typography, and manufacturing marks across production runs.

Collector Significance

Cans from Sebewaing Brewing Company carry substantial historical appeal due to the brewery's eventful final years. Between corporate reorganizations, an attempted takeover by Buckeye Brewing of Ohio blocked by local shareholder lawsuits, and the final shutdown in 1966 where remaining beer was drained into the Sebewaing River, Sebewaing cans stand as enduring artifacts of independent Midwestern brewing history.
