Sga Premium Beer Flat Top Can

SGA Premium Beer Flat Top Can

The SGA Premium Beer flat top can represents a classic mid-century supermarket label produced by the Schoenhofen Edelweiss Company of Chicago, Illinois. Packaged for the Supermarket Grocers Association (SGA), this can was distributed through affiliated independent grocers and cooperative supermarket networks as an economical house brand to compete directly against major national breweries.

Design and Branding

The can's face features bold SGA branding alongside the distinctive tagline "Yours For Better Living." Like many contract-canned private labels of the period, the packaging was produced by the Continental Can Company and designed with clean, straightforward commercial typography.

Brewery History and Production

Schoenhofen Edelweiss, long renowned for its flagship Edelweiss label and extensive brewing facilities in Chicago, actively produced and canned private-label beers for grocery distributors, wholesalers, and regional store associations. Known variations of the SGA can exist with differences in mandatory brewery statements, including versions crediting Chicago, Illinois, as well as facilities in South Bend, Indiana.

For breweriana enthusiasts, the SGA can is a sought-after example of Chicago contract canning and grocery cooperative store-brand history.
