Shell's City Pilsener Beer 12 Oz Zip/Tab Top Can

Miami's Iconic Superstore Brew

Shell's City Pilsener Beer holds a distinct place in Florida breweriana history as a house brand crafted specifically for Shell's City, a landmark Miami enterprise often promoted during its mid-century heyday as the world's largest supermarket and department store. Located along NW 7th Avenue in Miami's Edison Center neighborhood, Shell's City was a sprawling retail institution that offered everything from groceries and package liquor to clothing and automotive supplies. To complement its massive volume of sales, the store contracted its own private-label beer.

Cans labeled with the brewery designation "S.C." trace their origins to the local brewing plant in Miami—the historic facility on NW 13th Street that operated under the National Brewing Company's southern division. By utilizing a dedicated local facility for its canning runs, Shell's City provided a branded beverage tailored directly to local patrons and tourists frequenting South Florida.

For regional and brand-specific collectors, this can serves as a tangible artifact of twentieth-century Florida commercial culture and the era of customized department store goods. The design features bold, mid-century typography and retail branding associated with the famed Miami complex. Across production runs, collectors have identified subtle graphic and textual variations, particularly involving mandatory brewery statements and minor lithography shifts, reflecting different batch printings during the store's beverage program.
