Shopwell Premium Beer Flat Top Can

Sunshine's Shopwell Flat Top

The Shopwell Premium Beer flat top can represents an intriguing chapter in the packaging and contract brewing history of the Sunshine Brewing Company, based in Reading, Pennsylvania. Tracing its heritage back to nineteenth-century operations established by Peter Barbey, Sunshine grew into a prominent regional brewery in eastern Pennsylvania.

During its operations, Sunshine supplemented its primary product line by taking on private-label canning contracts for supermarket chains. Among these private brands was Shopwell, canned for the regional grocery chain associated with Daitch Crystal Dairies in the Mid-Atlantic and New York markets. While other regional contract brewers also produced cans bearing the Shopwell name, the Sunshine Brewing Company iteration is especially prized by breweriana collectors dedicated to historic Pennsylvania brewing and private-label supermarket lines.

The can's graphic layout showcases mid-century supermarket branding, featuring clean typography, distinct color banding, and traditional heraldic crest motifs. For collectors studying production runs, variations exist across manufacturing batches, identifiable through subtle shifts in brewery mandatory text, state tax lid markings, and container manufacturer insignias.
