Silver Bar Sparkling Ale Flat Top Can

Silver Bar Sparkling Ale Overview

Produced by the Southern Brewing Company of Tampa, Florida, the Silver Bar Sparkling Ale flat top represents a notable chapter in Florida's mid-century brewing heritage. Southern Brewing Company established its operations at the corner of Zack and Pierce Streets shortly after the repeal of Prohibition. The brewery quickly distinguished itself in the Tampa Bay market, known for its street-level facility featuring large glass observation windows that allowed passersby to watch brewing operations, alongside an open hospitality room that welcomed visitors.

Silver Bar served as Southern's premier product line alongside their flagship SB label. The brewery's widespread "SB" monogram served double duty, representing both Southern Brewing Company and the Silver Bar brand. The Silver Bar Sparkling Ale can art features prominent mid-century lettering, clean horizontal banding, and the recognizable brewery logo.

Collectors recognize different variations of the Silver Bar ale label, with differences appearing in metallic background finishes, subtle text arrangements, and specialized top lids, including Florida tax stamps and brewery vanity lids.

In the late 1950s, Southern Brewing Company was acquired by International Breweries Inc. (IBI). The plant eventually closed in the 1960s following increased competition from large national brewing facilities that opened in Tampa. Because Southern operated exclusively as a regional brewer, surviving flat top cans from this Tampa brewery remain sought-after pieces of southern breweriana history.
