Silver Bar Sparkling Ale Flat Top Can

Silver Bar Sparkling Ale Overview

The Silver Bar Sparkling Ale flat top represents a notable chapter in Florida's commercial brewing history, originating from the Southern Brewing Company in Tampa. Established shortly after the repeal of Prohibition at Zack and Pierce Streets, Southern Brewing Company grew to become one of the most prominent regional brewing outfits in the Southeast. Its downtown packaging and brewhouse operations were famous for expansive glass windows that allowed passersby on the sidewalk to watch pints and cans roll through production.

Silver Bar served as a premier flagship label alongside the brewery's standard line. While lagers dominated the postwar market across the South, Southern Brewing Company maintained a strong regional presence with this sparkling ale offering. The can's design is recognized by collectors for its distinctive branding and the prominent "SB" monogramming associated with the historic Tampa plant.

Within regional breweriana collecting, this flat top is sought after due to the independent brewery's eventual acquisition by International Breweries Inc. in the late 1950s, which phased out many original local designs. Furthermore, a substantial portion of surviving examples in modern collections originated from salvaged flat production sheets rather than factory-filled cans, adding to the allure of authentic rolled and sealed specimens.

Variations of the label exist across production runs, featuring differences in metallic lithograph finishes, can manufacturer markings, and state tax lid stampings. This can stands as an enduring artifact of Tampa's mid-century independent brewing heritage prior to the arrival of national industry giants.
